Edmonton’s dish

A northern Chinese street snack that became ours.

Green onion cakes come from northern China, where most people call them scallion pancakes. Edmonton took them to heart in the 1980s. Festivals like the Fringe and Folk Fest made them part of growing up here, and now you find them all over the city.

Our family is Hoa, Chinese Vietnamese from Chợ Lớn in Saigon, and Edmonton is home. Green onion cakes are part of our Edmonton too.

How to eat them

Hot, torn, and dipped.

Tear one apart while it is hot. Most people like garlic hot sauce with it. Ours does not come with it, so add it when you order.

They make a good side for a bowl of soup or a plate to share:

Where the recipe comes from

Khai’s recipe.

In the 1990s, our head chef Khai Phung cooked at the Mongolian Food Experience in the Kelly Ramsey Building on Rice Howard Way, downtown Edmonton. He learned the trade there, working under Siu To.

The green onion cakes we serve are Khai’s own recipe, made just for us by a local maker. Everything else on our menu, from the pho broth to the ginger beef, is made from scratch in our kitchen.

We think ours are the best. Try one and tell us yours.

That is our family’s opinion, not a contest result. Read how Khai’s ginger beef began downtown.
